Program/Department Summary

  • The Mercy Corps Finance Department is responsible for all financial functions in Abuja, including accounting, payments and banking, payroll, budgeting, financial reporting, and grant financial management and compliance.
  • The Mercy Corps Finance Department ensures compliance with donor regulations as well as Mercy Corps internal policies and procedures.
  • In its role as a support to the Program Department, the Finance Department provides timely reports and assistance to the Country Director and the Program team to ensure that financial resources are used efficiently and effectively.

General Position Summary

  • Working in the Finance Department under the direction of the Finance Manager, the Senior Grants and Finance Officer will assist in the accounting and documentation of all financial transactions in timely and accurate manner.

Essential Job Functions

  • Support grant management procedures at all stages including timely preparation of budgets, sub-grants agreements and review of financial reports.
  • Develop and update project-specific budget and financial reporting templates for MC sub-recipients, as requested by donors.
  • Maintain and monitor a consolidated sub-award financial tracking tool for projects.
  • Coordinate review of all requests from sub-recipients for prior approvals as well as budget modifications
  • Facilitate response to donor specific audit requests
  • Support sub-grant management system
  • Participate in the month end accounting close process
  • Assist with month end balance sheet account reconciliations
  • Make sure that all supporting documentation under each grant is adequate and filed according to MC Procedures
  • Support financial management in line with all donor regulations
  • Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Grants & Finance Officer, Finance Assistants, Interns


  • Reports Directly To: This position will report directly to the Country Finance Manager and have a dotted line reporting to Program Directors
  • Works Directly With: Country Finance Manager, Directors of Programs, Senior Finance Officer, Operations and Project teams.

Knowledge And Experience

  • A University degree in Accounting and professional accounting qualification such as ACA, CPA, ACCA is required.
  • Five years or more general accounting experience, three of which must be in a finance or grants management department of an international NGO
  • Specific experience with USAID and DFID grants is required
  • Experience in institutional capacity assessment and capacity building is an advantage
  • Demonstrated competence with computerized general ledger software such as Serenic navigator, quick books, Sun system or the like
  • Strong computer skills in MS Office programs, particularly Excel is a must
  • Prior management experience with strong organizational skills as well as attention to detail
  • Ability to explain complex legal, regulatory, budget and financial information to a broad range of individuals from various backgrounds.
  • Experience conducting trainings for field office staff and in-country partners with a wide range of skills and prior knowledge.
  • Excellent oral and written English skills
  • Ability to speak Hausa language is an advantage.

Success Factors:

  • A clear understanding of finance and procurement ethics as well as the willingness and ability to enforce compliance with Mercy Corps and donor policies and procedures is essential.
  • The ability to interact effectively with international and national staff members is required.
  • A demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately, meet deadlines and process information in support of changing program activities is necessary.
  • Willingness to travel including travel to the northern part of Nigeria.
